Foreign accent in intonation patterns - a contrastive study applying a quantitative model of the F0 contour
نویسنده
چکیده
The present study examines the in uence of intonational contrasts of German and Japanese on the F0 patterns of Japanese learners of German. It was found that Japanese learners generally place the word accent in compound words on the right-most (the generic) term which suggests that they adopt rules of accent concatenation of Japanese. In contrast to native speakers of German, they tend to place substantially more falling accents at utterance-medial phrase boundaries. The intonational patterns for marking questions are di erent from those found in utterances of German speakers, where generally only yes-/no-questions feature a question nal rise. Prosodic phrases in the Japanese group are generally shorter and are often not determined by the linguistic content of an utterance but by the occurrence of phonetically `di cult' or possibly unknown words.

Identifying Intonational Foreign Accent with the Help of Different Methods of Fo Generation
Fo generation is an effective instrument for identifying intonational foreign accent (IFA), as it can be applied to determine the relevance of observed deviations in the intonation patterns produced by non-native speakers of a language, This study aims to show that the method of intonation description that is used and that also serves as the basis for F0 generation determines the form of the ob...

This paper presents a pilot study on the prosodic marking of a contrastive topic in Southern Swedish. A test sentence was elicited in three experimental conditions: initial focus; final focus; contrastive topic (initial word) plus focus (final word). F0 patterns were analysed in recordings of 10 speakers. A majority of the speakers distinguished clearly between the conditions, but speakers empl...

متن کاملComponents of a Quantitative Model of German Intonation
In this paper a quantitative description of German intonation is presented. It will be demonstrated that intonation contours can be efficiently analyzed, and predicted, by interpreting the components and parameters of Fujisaki’s model in terms of linguistic features and categories. It will also be argued that a superpositionally organized model is particularly suitable for a quantitatve descrip...
متن کاملMeaning and Intonation: The cases of contrastive accent and meta-linguistic negation
In this article we outline a methodological approach to the study of meaning and intonation. This approach focusses both on what speakers can produce (using production experiments) and on what hearers can perceive (using perception experiments). We show that such an experimental paradigm may yield interesting results from a semantical point of view by discussing two speciic cases: contrastive a...
